March 17, 2019
Luke 11:37-46

37As He was speaking, a Phariseeasked Him to dine with him. So He went in and reclined at the table.38When the Pharisee saw this, he was amazed that He did not first perform the ritual washingbefore dinner.39But the Lord said to him:“Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greedand evil.40Fools!Didn’t He who made the outside make the inside too?41But give from what is within to the poor, and then everything is cleanfor you.
42“But woeto you Pharisees! You give a tenthof mint, rue, and every kind of herb, and you bypassjusticeand love for God.These things you should have done without neglecting the others.
43“Woe to you Pharisees! You love the front seatin the synagoguesand greetings in the marketplaces.
44“Woe to you!You are like unmarked graves;the people who walk over them don’t know it.”
45One of the experts in the lawanswered Him, “Teacher, when You say these things You insult us too.”
46Then He said:“Woe also to you experts in the law! You load people with burdensthat are hard to carry, yet you yourselves don’t touch these burdens with one of your fingers.

I. Jesus is disruptively honest (Luke 11:37-46; Matthew 23:15)

A) Everything Jesus does is consistent with love. God is love and cannot act outside of His character.
B) Remember why Jesus came – What was His purpose?
C) Jesus is full of truth and grace (John 1:17, Luke 10:38-42) – Jesus: reproach to the proud; grace to the humble.

II. Are we willing to be disruptively honest with others? Why aren’t we more willing to be disruptively honest with each other?

A) It will cost us
B) Do we care enough?

III. Are we willing to hear disruptive honesty from others?

A) Is your heart humble to receive words of advice, criticism, or rebuke from others?
B) The best way to develop humility is to obsess yourself with Jesus. The 2nd best way (for me at least) is to purposefully seek people’s critical thoughts (Proverbs 8:33; 12:1; 15:32; Psalm 139:23-24)

IV. Are we willing to hear the disruptive honesty from Jesus?
