1 In the same way, wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, even if some disobey the Christian message, they may be won overwithout a message by the way their wives live2when they observe your pure, reverent lives.3Your beauty should not consist of outward things like elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold ornamentsor fine clothes.4Instead, it should consist of what is insidethe heartwith the imperishable quality of a gentleand quietspirit, which is very valuable in God’s eyes.5For in the past, the holywomen who put their hopein God also beautified themselves in this way, submitting to their own husbands,6just as Sarahobeyed Abraham, calling him lord. You have become her children when you do what is good and are not frightened by anything alarming.
7Husbands,in the same way, live with your wives with an understanding of their weaker natureyet showing them honor as coheirs of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.

Intro: Is the Bible full of outdated, irrelevant, and culturally disrespectful teaching?

I. Observations of the general nature of males and females

A) Men are stronger than women (generally, not exclusively).
B) God created male and female (Genesis 1:27) – God does not prefer the male gender or consider them more important/significant.

II. The difference between equal value and equal role/responsibility

A role or responsibility does not indicate value. Value is intrinsic. Worth of something is endowed by its creator based on the creator’s thoughts or enjoyment of it (Genesis 1:31).
Roles and responsibilities are the assignments or tasks that simply allow for systems to function properly.

III. Some important considerations

A) Exercise the fear of the Lord over fear of the culture/people
B) Have a considerate and humble approach to the interpretation of Scripture.

IV. Specific application-oriented thoughts

A) We must never compromise God’s design and intention for humanity. Neither should we abuse it.
B) We must always act in compassion towards those who are bearing the weight of the effects of a broken and sinful human condition.
C) External equality (roles, responsibilities, perception of value) should not be the focus. Internal equality is the reality by God’s design and especially in Christ.
