Is the wife's role of submission sexists and demeaning?
I Peter 3:1-6
October 20, 2019

1 In the same way, wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, even if some disobey the Christian message, they may be won overwithout a message by the way their wives live2when they observe your pure, reverent lives.3Your beauty should not consist of outward things like elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold ornamentsor fine clothes.4Instead, it should consist of what is insidethe heartwith the imperishable quality of a gentleand quietspirit, which is very valuable in God’s eyes.5For in the past, the holywomen who put their hopein God also beautified themselves in this way, submitting to their own husbands,6just as Sarahobeyed Abraham, calling him lord. You have become her children when you do what is good and are not frightened by anything alarming.

Intro: Three primary Christian emphases should be highlighted before we take a look at this command to the wife to “submit” to her husband…

1) The Glory of God - - - > Fear of God (Proverbs 1:7, 19:23)

2) Gospel-centeredness (Phil. 2:5-8)

3) Our highest personal good is to be close to God (Matt. 22:37-38; Phil. 1:21, 3:7-10)

v. 1“Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands”

What is submission?

Is the wife's role of submission sexists and demeaning?

“In the same way” (I Peter 2:13, 18; Ephesians 5:21-24)

vs. 1-2 – Major challenges for wives in submission:

1) When your husband doesn’t obey/believe in Christ

2) When you and your husband don’t see eye-to-eye on a significant issue.

3) When you don’t have a personality that is naturally submissive.

4) When your husband isn’t treating you with love and respect.

v. 2 – Lifestyle vs. Word

The Family Crazy Cycle (Love and Respect, Dr. Emerson Eggerichs) – it is critical for someone to break it!
