A Woman’s Beauty
Why does it seem like the men get off so easy?
I Peter 3:3-7

3Your beauty should not consist of outward things like elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold ornamentsor fine clothes.4Instead, it should consist of what is insidethe heartwith the imperishable quality of a gentleand quietspirit, which is very valuable in God’s eyes.5For in the past, the holywomen who put their hopein God also beautified themselves in this way, submitting to their own husbands,6just as Sarahobeyed Abraham, calling him lord. You have become her children when you do what is good and are not frightened by anything alarming. 7Husbands,in the same way, live with your wives with an understanding of their weaker natureyet showing them honor as coheirs of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.

I. The calling for women/wives:

The focus of your beauty should not be external, but internal. v. 3-6; I Timothy 2:9-10

External beauty is meaningless if you don’t have inner beauty.
(Matthew 16:26; Proverbs 31:30)

II. Why does it seem like the men get off so easy?

The quick answer – THEY DON’T!
The longer answer – Husbands here – v. 7 – are called to 3 attributes:

1) Submission – “in the same way”… (context of I Peter 2:11 – 3:7; Ephesians 5:18-32)

2) Sensitivity – “understanding of their weaker nature”

Submission and Sensitivity are not feminine characteristics. They are good husband characteristics.

3) Showing honor – “showing them honor as co-heirs of the grace of life”

Application points:

1) Meditate on the gospel often – think about it in context of the roles you have in life

2) Seek the glory of God and a deeper relationship with God

3) Re-orient your view of your role as husband/wife to the Scriptural view – Gospel centered!

Conclusion: Avoid “if you…then I’ll…” – I John 4:10; Romans 5:8
